I spent 20 years of my life shooting images for National Geographic. Every time they sent me out, they would ask me to Celebrate What’s Right with the World. Not in some kind of ostrich-like perspective that denied the very real pain and suffering that exists on the planet. But a perspective that put those problems into a larger context. A context where we can still fill with gratitude for all that we have been given. A context where we can still find hope in all the possibilities we have yet to explore.
It may seem strange, but the more I celebrated what was right with the world, the more I found the energy to help fix what was wrong with it.
Everyday through my lens I see visions that make me want to celebrate. Early in 2010 I decided to stop keeping these moments to myself and instead to share them with as many people as possible. To put out images each week by Email, on Facebook, on Twitter, any way that I could. Simply to help folks, just for a moment, to reflect on all that was right in their lives.
There are now over 15,000 folks that receive my weekly images.
Will they change the world? I don’t know, maybe. They change me. Just the act of reflecting each week on how much I have to be thankful for makes me a better person. Perhaps they will give others the courage, or maybe just the space, to do the same.
Can you imagine a world in which every person, everyday, celebrated what was right? I can. It would be incredible.
So pass my photos on to your friends. Or, better yet, put your own Celebration images (or your writings or your paintings or your songs or your stories) out into the world so that others can see them!
